Lesson 1: Introduction to the Cold War
Cold War -John Greene video or Mr. Hughes will point out Cold War Era. Almost Immediately after WWII until 1990 the United States and the Soviet Union/Russia were engaged in a conflict over ideological differences and influence in the world.
We will start our unit on the Cold War by discussing what pitted the US against the USSR after WWII. Afterall, weren't the US and USSR allies in 1945 when the war ended?
To understand the issues that caused the Cold War we have to understand the term ideology.

After two post-war conferences - the Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference - it was clear that Soviet Russia and their former allies The United States and Great Britain did not see eye to eye on the future of Europe. A few issues were at the center of focus

The division of Germany
The US, France, Great Britain and Soviet Union agreed that Germany would be divided into 4 regions.
Each power could take reparations from the area if they wished
Russia was also given the right to take 10% of the industrial equipment from the western zones
The US, France and Great Britain focused on rebuilding Germany and fostering a democratic and capitalist ally in Europe
Russia focused on punishing Germany and making sure Germany could not become a threat

Background: As the Soviet Union pushed to support communist governments and the United States kept true to the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan military alliances took form.
The United States formed NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and promised to defend any of its members
