Differences US & Soviets interactive Link showing the two sides of the Cold War.

Mr. Hughes introduces the Cold War (11:26):

We will start our unit on the Cold War by discussing what pitted the US against the USSR after WWII. Afterall, weren't the US and USSR allies in 1945 when the war ended?

To understand the issues that caused the Cold War we have to understand the term ideology.

lesson 2: The World Divided: East vs West

Borders, Races, Alliances, Containment, East vs. West

After WWII peace was not exactly what the Allies thought it was going to be. Almost immediately after the war tensions in Europe were on the rise over issues like:

  • How to reorganize Europe after the war?
  • Who will be the dominant power in the region?
  • What ideology will take over the world - democratic capitalism or state led communism?

After two post-war conferences - the Yalta Conference and the Potsdam Conference -  it was clear that Soviet Russia and their former allies The United States and Great Britain did not see eye to eye on the future of Europe. A few issues were at the center of focus

  • How to divide Germany?
  • Reparations after the world?
  • Who would have the dominant influence in Europe?

The division of Germany

Picture
The US, France, Great Britain and Soviet Union agreed that Germany would be divided into 4 regions.
  • Each power could take reparations from the area if they wished
  • Russia was also given the right to take 10% of the industrial equipment from the western zones
  • The US, France and Great Britain focused on rebuilding Germany and fostering a democratic and capitalist ally in Europe
  • Russia focused on punishing Germany and making sure Germany could not become a threat

The Iron Curtain

East vs West
The Iron Curtain divided Europe and Asia into Eastern and Western Spheres.
East - Pink Color - the the right of the line
  • Supported by Soviet Russia
  • Communist ideology

West - Blue in color - to the left of the line
  • Supported by the United States and Great Britain
  • Democratic ideology
  • Capitalist economies

Explore the interactive map to learn more about the relationships of Eastern and Western countries. Select two countries from the West and two countries from the East. For each country, find out what style of government the country had, who the country was friends with and if the country still shares the same characteristics and relationships.
