Activity 2

Big Question: How does the media influence the way people think?

Journalism Activity 2- This is for the first lesson of class. Issues can be twisted, you decide how.

Topic:  Obama saying “ You didn’t build this” referring to business owners not building their own companies. What did this statement mean and how is it twisted both ways?

Guiding questions:

Should the rich pay more in taxes by not getting a tax break?

Should everyone else pay more in taxes so the rich can get a tax break?

How are jobs created, through consumers having more money to buy products or wealthy people having more money to invest?

First look at the rhetoric in the titles of the links.... Then look for the rhetoric in the links.....

Conclusions

1.

2.

3.

4.

How is the rhetorical evidence different between the two sides of the issue?

Exit: How is this activity going to change the way you view the news?

What process did you use to arrive at your conclusions? The process is more important than the conclusion!!
