What happened?

A depression is part of a business cycle that normally follows a period of prosperity, heavy (wartime) consumption, overextention of credit, overproduction, and speculation. It is often accompanied by a financial panic (October 24th, 1929) or crash (October 29th, 1929, Black Tuesday).

The Key word is "over" when looking at the Depression

Over confidence the roar of the 1920's would never end, prosperity would never end, the U.S. world power would never end.

Image result for pictures of the great depression

As Roaring as the 1920's was, the decade was over, it crashed (October 29th, Black Tuesday) the bottom fell out ! The bill came due!

1. Over borrowing on consumer goods, farms, stocks created a banking crisis.

2. Over production by an aging industrial base with limited markets for their goods.

3. Over speculation in the stock market lead to over confidence and  "buying on margin."

4. Over profit taking by a few so the gap between the rich and poor grew to an unhealthy uneven distribution of wealth.
